Founded in 1890, the AStA – Allgemeines Statistisches Archiv covered the broad range of activities of the Society as a whole. It published articles ranging from pure research articles to discussions of the social implications of statistics.

Meanwhile, all these areas of statistics have developed to such an extent that it is difficult, if not impossible, to cover them in a single journal. The Society has therefore decided to publish two journals starting in 2007, AStA – Advances in Statistical Analysis and AStA – Wirtschafts- und Sozialstatistisches Archiv, which together will continue the tradition of the original journal. While the Wirtschafts- und Sozialstatistische Archiv deals with topics from economic and social statistics as well as those on the social significance of statistics, the Advances in Statistical Analysis is devoted to the theory and methods of statistics.
